Iain McGilChrist's work drew my attention to this passage by Goethe: "Do you know the land where the lemon-trees grow, in darkened leaves the gold-oranges glow, a soft wind blows from the pure blue sky, the myrtle stands mute, and the bay-tree high" He described this as the Northern European's innate longing for his ancestral tropical home. I think this is the reason I love the catalpa tree, which grows in temperate climates, but whose large leaves seem exotic, from a magical, far-off place.
