Growing up, my window looked into a forest, and I remember as a child being overwhelmed by a sense of its vastness and ancientness. Perhaps my earliest artistic impulse was to capture, in pencil or paint, the mystery of the woods, especially as evening approached and insects sounded from within. I painted this over several live sessions at the fleeting edge of the day, and I felt that it captured some aspect of the forest's intrigue.
